Insights on Winnie Arboleda's Actions

Wynne Arboleda of the Burger King (BK) Whoppers has been suspended without pay for the rest of the 2009-2010 PBA season due to his unruly actions to a fan on their game last october 16, 2009.

During the second quarter of the Burger King Whooper vs. Smart-Gilas Pilipinas game, Arboleda attacked a fan named Alain Katigbak that resulted to a P2.7 million salary loss caused by his suspension.

PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios said that Arboleda asked for his forgiveness when they met Monday morning.

Arboleda said to Barrios he was ready to face the consequences of his action that was prompted by Katigbak’s curses.

“I told him so unfortunately for us, Winnie in a situation where we are, walang acceptable reason once you cross the line of hurting fans, there’s no acceptable reason, and he accepts that fact,” Barrios told ABS-CBN News.

The PBA Commissioner, in addition, also addressed the league’s spectators: “We would like to encourage our fans to be more responsible when they watch games, let’s cheer not jeer.”

Looking upon this issue, Arboleda said that his actions was provoked by the incessant name-calling and cursing uttered by the said fan particularly to him each time he was within hearing distance. He can't completely be blamed about his actions. His emotions would not flare up if Katigbak would be responsible enough in watching his words during the game. Although it is very unprofessional for a Wynne to do such actions, it is very irresponsible also for a fan to directly criticize or insult a player.

In response to the issue, fans, as Barrios said, must be responsible enough when they watch such basketball games. Fans are there to support, not to degrade an opponent. On the other hand, players should be professional enough in controlling their emotions. As a player of national league's like PBA, he should be ready enough to face such circumstances like this.
